Fitzroy Loft by Architects EAT Melbourne

Melbourne based design practice Architects EAT were recently awarded Best Residential Interior at the Australian Interior Design Awards for this amazing loft conversion in a 125 year old former factory in Fitzroy, an inner city suburb of Melbourne. We love the soaring saw tooth ceiling as well as the fusion of respectfully preserved original features and the sleek new additions of steel, glass and timber, combining to create light filled open spaces as well as intimate zones on each level. The suspended foot bridge is an amazing addition connecting the mezzanine spaces. We love the soft grey kitchen and living space joinery paired beautifully with the marble finishes and the black steel framed glazing.

Design statement

Fitzroy Loft is a warehouse conversion inside the 125-year-old MacRobertson chocolate factory in Fitzroy, Victoria. The project is about bringing light and air deep into the home, while maintaining the integrity and context of its historical significance. Three internal voids are devised to highlight the original factory heights. While the brief called for a sizeable family home, keeping the integrity of the original factory’s bones was vital. Walls and floors that were built in more recent years were torn down to expose charred beams and remnant paint.

The interior is a series of spaces linked by three internal voids. The first void is the courtyard, which is directly connected to the main living room and the kitchen. The second void is located as a zoning device, separating the living spaces from the private zones on the lower floor. And the third void is placed at the very back in the library, displaying the original timber column and beam, and allowing the soft southern ambient light to touch the library and the mezzanine study above.

Norsu Interiors 2016 Collection

These beautiful photos of norsu interiors 2016 collection campaign styled by Michelle Halford of The Design Chaser were captured by Lisa Cohen.

Images show different interior spaces in norsu‘s signature pastel colour palette, styled with the boutique’s carefully curated collection of Nordic homewares and diverse range of art prints. The collection also features several images shot in a Scandinavian ‘boho luxe’ style, reflecting a new direction norsu is taking since announcing their partnership with iconic Swedish designhouse Love Warriors of Sweden earlier this year.

The release of this collection coincides with the opening of their second Melbourne retail store in Hawthorn next month which will compliment their existing Malvern East store by providing a space to showcase furniture, rugs and art within a styled insitu environment.

Concrete House in Torquay Australia

This concrete house, designed for a young growing family by Auhaus Architecture Australia is located in Torquay on the Victorian Surf Coast. The house has been designed as a walled sanctuary, opening up onto itself, an internalised habitat with draping roof gardens and curated glimpses onto the adjoining wetlands. A portal opening in the concrete facade conceals a small secluded courtyard leading to the glazed front door. Upon entry, the house opens up into double height gallery space, glazed on one side to reveal the plan which wraps around a large, north facing courtyard. Each floor rests on slender columns, the fine lines counterpointing the natural mass of the concrete. Hardwood battens and brass detailing throughout provide patterning and warmth.

Beautiful hand crafted clay beaded chandeliers from South Africa

Introducing klaylife™ – Clay beaded chandeliers, proudly hand crafted by the women of South Africa.

While majority of lights are factory produced, these chandeliers have a human story. They’re lovingly made by the hands of local women on a small farm in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. Our partner and designer Merewyn (owner of Hellooow Handmade) works closely with her team to hand create each work of art.

Drawing on African heritage and local craftsmanship, each bead is hand rolled using raw clay from the region. They are then dried, kiln fired and dip-dyed before being masterfully strung onto its unique wrought iron frame. This hand made process ensures that no two lights will ever be the same.

Initially, our chandeliers were crafted by local women whose lives had been impacted by HIV and so desperately needed an income to support their families. Over time, as our popularity grew, more and more women with differing circumstances approached Merewyn for work. As a result our criteria has been broadened to any local woman who is prepared to put in the effort to create something special.

In 2012, 8 ladies were permanently employed. There are now over 65 dedicated women rolling beads and creating their own masterpiece. More importantly, they’re making a difference to their local community.

Today our chandeliers can be found lighting up some of the most gorgeous homes, hotels, restaurants and reception centres around the world.

klaylife™ is run by a South African family now based in Melbourne, Australia.  Available to purchase online here.
